Lack of Sustainability in the Textile Industry

“Sustainability is the conservation of life through ecological balance-human, animal, vegetable, and planetary. A self-sustaining system is a system that does not take more from the environment than it gives back; it does not deplete resources, but sustains itself…. So what is sustainable design? In clothing, it means sourcing and production that do not pollute through the process of manufacture and do not deplete non renewable resources, whether those are planetary or human. It refers to clothing that can be absorbed back into the environment when it has reached the end of its life. Very few products, let alone garments, fulfill the concept of sustainability it its entirety.
….
The clothing and textile industry is one of the largest industries in the world, employing one sixth of the world’s population. It uses more water than any other industry apart from agriculture. It discharges toxic chemicals into the environment, uses huge amounts of energy and is a major contributor to global warming. As a design community, we share the collective guilt of sweatshops, environmental pollution and child labor. As an industry, we lag behind the rest of the art and design community, where significant number of architects, interior designers and cosmetic and fragrance companies base their business practices in ethical design. The industry traditionally satisfies itself with high-profile, red carpet events that raise enormous amounts of cash and which allow us as a community to collectively wash our hands of our responsibility to society and the sustainability of our planet, on an annual basis. The bleak concerns of The Wall Street Journal’s Bob Ortega were quoted in his 1998 book, In Sun We Trust: ‘In truth, the entire apparel industry was one continuing and under-reported scandal’.
-excerpts from “Eco-fashion” by Sass Brown

I am working my way towards a degree in Textiles and Merchandising with a minor in Interior Design. And more often then not, when I tell people my major they get a bit confused and wonder what the heck a textile degree even is. One of my more enlightening classes in the department was “Textiles and the Environment” but it was also one of my more depressing classes. The textile industry is huge and employeesa sixth of the World’s population (as mentioned above) and yet it is one of the most environmentally detrimental industries in the World. According to the Huffington post, it takes 1,800 gallons of water to grow enough cotton to make a pair of jeans and it takes 400 gallons of water to grow the cotton for a cotton t-shirt. And that’s just the amount of water it takes for growing the products! The manufacturing process requires even more and throw in some chemicals that probably aren’t so great for the environment and ta-da! You’ve got our clothes.

And yet somehow the fashion industry has managed to not improve their ways. Some companies are and are really trying to improve their processes. Every 4 years I believe, there is a conference where some of the big honcho’s in textile manufacturing machines get together, kind of like a machine fair, and show off their new environmentally friendly machines. We’re getting there. But as a whole the industry is far behind. But I think a lot of this can be attributed to the way fashion works. It’s constantly changing and constantly trying to be different. So boom! We have fast fashions and places like forever 21 that sell things for $5 but it’s only going to hold up to be worn a few times.

“Fast fashion, planned obsolescent, ignorance and waste rule. In the UK last year, people threw away over two million tonnes of fast-fashion clothing that was worn an average of just six times.”
-Geoffrey B. Small

Not only is the manufacturing process of textiles horrible but the end of life cycle of textiles is horrible. Fast fashions are filling our landfills and are not biodegradable. Which is why I think my major is so important. I didn’t go into this degree looking for a environmental cause, I’ve always wanted to study Interior Design and this was the easiest way for me to go about it. But once you even take a little glimpse into the industry it’s very disheartening. I think it’s the job and responsibility for the entire industry to get off it’s butt and start figuring out ways to make fashion more sustainable. I’m not sure how I can help out yet, but I really feel like I need to. A lot of the eco-friendly clothes that have been designed are just bland and boring. But it doesn’t have to be that way and the industry needs to step it up.

And there are lots of ways that people outside of the industry are starting to do this.Vintage has become a major fashion “do”, which is great because it’s keeping pieces out of the landfills. Likewise, thrift store shopping is also a great way to keep the life cycle of an article of clothing going. I will forever treasure my sewing skills because it allows me to take something that wasn’t cute and make it a new style (old t-shirts into skirts, re-fitting dresses, turning old jeans into lace shorts). I realize not everyone has the time or skills to re-do some thrift store clothes but it’s a great way to help out our environment. (I highly suggest checking out this blog: http://www.newdressaday.com/ She spends $1 a day at a thrift store and remakes the clothes into new things) Being conscious consumers is important more than ever in this day and age, so even if you don’t want to buy thrift store clothes at least do some research on the companies you buy from. Quality over quantity is always a better choice.

(p.s. i've been quite horrible about blogging lately. must work on this!)

Design on the Cheap

My bathroom is teeny tiny. I share a shower with the girl across the hall but have a little sink/toilet in my apartment. And for some reason... there was no mirror in my bathroom. But alas! I have fixed that. In a most wondrous way.
Ta-da! The mirror was $10 from a thrift store, but was a tacky gold color so I decided to paint it white. Once I find a mint spray paint color that I like I'll paint it mint. I think that would look so much more bold. The wall paper look behind it is actually cabinet liner (that stuff you stick to the bottom of kitchen cabinets to keep them clean). And best of all? It's from the dollar store.
You don't have to spend lots of money to have a good looking place.

New Kitchen Chairs!

I bought 2 of these chairs from Ikea yesterday for $20 a pop
But black is not a color that shows up much in my apartment so I thought I'd do a little redo. And shazam! I turned them lime green.
I also ordered this awesome chevron patterned fabric from fabric.com (for only $6 a yard!) to make some cushions for my chairs and curtains for my closets. (As of right now they don't have anything covering them so you can see the mess of my closet)
My apartment is slowly coming together. Once I have it as I want it I'll post pictures. Inadvertently, my colors have ended up being like what's in the chevron fabric. I didn't plan it out like that but it has kind of just happened to end up this way. I have a turquoise thrift store desk, the kitchen table and my bedspread are navy blue, and my kitchen plates/bowls/teapots and now kitchen chairs are lime green. Navy blue, turquoise, and lime green. It sounds pretty bright but they actually mesh quite well together. Ironically, I've had these 3 colors since I started college. For my first college dorm I bought these paper lanterns to go in my room.
And now they are the color scheme for my first single apartment. Coincidence? Or Physic?

Sorry for being M.I.A.
I went on a climbing trip, got strep throat and was out for a few days, and have been pretty busy working since then.

Re-Furbish an Old Dresser

It's been a whirle wind of a week. I got to go back to my parents house last week and see the Fam Fam. Unfortunately I've been sick as a dog and was kind of a dud the whole visit. I moved into my new studio apartment on Saturday and will post pics as soon as I get it all decorated. (It's a bit hard to blog because I don't have internet at my house yet.)
Anyways, in light of me moving and every single piece of my apartment being from a thrift store I thought I'd post some inspiring furniture re-do's. Furnishing a cute space doesn't have to be expensive, it just might take a little more manual labor. Getting old furntiure with good bones is great for an inexpenisve makeover. I'm a poor POOR college student and I've managed to furnish an entire apartment for well under $200. Again, once I take pictures of the apartment I'll go over a budget. Getting cheap furniture and giving it a makeover can give your space a sense of character and look fabulous. Pinterest honestly has more tips and ideas for re-doing furniture than I could ever possibly try and come up with. But here's some pictures to help you get inspired. (All from Pinterest)

Maybe add a nice chevron stripe or paint a pattern onto an old dresser or desk?

If you are really artist try adding some interesting to an old piece of furniture (like this ship) to make that old furniture a new center piece.

New fabric or some awesome fabric paint can totally re-do an old chair.

Try a fresh coat of paint in a really bright color to spruce things up a bit. I paint my vanity (from a thrift store) in a turquoise similar to this. It looks so much better in a bright color that pops. Neutral colors aren't always the right choice for furniture. Go bold!

Inspiration, April 28th

I first saw this on Pinterest but it's originally from Better Homes and Gardens. And ya know what? I love it.
I am a fan of grey walls, neutral colors can often be boring but grey adds some spice but leaves you room to accessories with bright colors. And as this picture shows, it can even go with some beautiful hard wood floors.
What I love about this room is that they've mixed calming clean colors with bright spring colors. It gives the air of sophistication and relaxation all at the same time. Parfait! I love that the wooden furniture is a pale lime green and that they chose white couches to balance it out.
Also, can we talk about the large art piece! It's large and in charge but not overpowering. The simplicity fits marvelously with the rest of the room.

Sorry for the leave of absence

Offta! Let me tell ya, taking 18 credits and working 26+ hours a week was an awful decision on my part and also the reason I haven't been posting anything lately. But the hard work is mostly done (1 week left!) and then I'm free! Well kinda... I'm taking 2 summer classes. But! I will actually have time to post about the lovely world of Interior Design.
My lovely roommate is graduating this year (lucky duck) which means that I am on my own next year and have been apartment hunting. I'm getting either a studio or an single bedroom and am VERY excited to design a place that is mine. Which also means lots of DIY and updates on my new apartment decorating. Do you know how frustrating it is to be studying interior design and not get to have your own space? Because I am beyond exited I've been going thrift shopping to find furniture. And I found a beautiful antique love seat for $40! (see below picture) I know my lady looks a little worn out but the shape of her is beautiful. With my new found sewing skills I'm going to attempt to make a slip cover myself (since I can't afford to re-upholster her). I think I'll name her Patricia. (Hey, if cars can have sexes and names so can furniture). At the same store I found a solid wood kitchen table with blue painted legs (which I'll re-do) for $50 so I'm going to be picking those two things up soon. Having a cute place does not require a lot of money and I am setting out to do that. Prepare for more apartment updates and inspiration photos and let me know if you'd like to see anything else!

LOVE this! The space is so open and inviting!
And obviously I have a slight obsession with turquoise. But the open windows and the natural colors merge perfectly together. A little bit of the outside is living inside. I want a sunroom!

Upcycling

I am a Textiles and Merchandising major which means I learn A LOT about textiles. Most of the time when I tell people my major they get this confused look on their face and have no idea what I'm talking about or what kind of job I plan on doing with it. The textile industry is HUGE and makes billions and billions of dollars every year. Think about where your sitting right now. The chair your sitting on needed fabric and fibers to make the cushion and cover, the carpet that chair is sitting on is made from fibers, the clothes you're wearing, the rug, that lamps shade, and on and on. One of my classes this semester is "Textiles and the Environment". So far we've been mostly focusing on eco-friendly stuff in general, not as specific in the textiles aspect of things, but we're starting to get into textiles. Did you know that it takes 10,000 liters to make a pair of jeans? And anywhere from 2000-3000 liters to make a t-shirt. Making textiles is a major process. Once I learn more I would like to start posting more on tips for being eco-friendly, we all have a part to play in being nicer to our environment and there's lots of little things we can do. In the meantime, I recently watched this clip on the Nate Berkus website (he's fabulous). It's all about "upcycling". Donating clothes is a fantastic thing but there are so many ways to re-use fabrics that keeps them out of the landfill. Why don't you take that old sweater and make some mittens? Or use those old t-shirts for a quilt? Here's the link for the clip that gives some really great ideas on recycling what you have around the house. (I really love the sweater seat cushion)

OHMYGODIWANTTHISNOW. Sorry... Had to get that out. I'm totally digging the chevron look right now. And I absolutely LOVE this as an accent wall. Plus the yellow chair the back? Wonderful!
It just increases my need for my own apartment. I have 2 years left in Laramie. I'm getting my own place as soon as my lease is up and hopefully making it beautiful for the rest of my stay in this town.

There is entirely too much white in this room for me. Where's the color?! Where's the art on the wall? That being said, ohmygoodness those wooden roof beams! How marvelous are they? And I'm also really enjoying the open layout of the room.

First week of school.

This has been a hectic first week of school and will continue to be a hectic semester. 26 work hours + 18 credit hours, here we come. But thankfully for the survival of this blog I'm studying Textiles & Merchandising and Interior Design which means school jams lots of information into my brain concerning interiors, apparel, and textiles in general. One of the more interesting classes I'm in is "Clothing in Modern Society". Yeah. I get to study fashion within the world. Super pumped. Another one is Textile Industry and Environment. Where we'll be learning about how to keep textiles "green" and what goes into a lot of manufacturing processes for the fabric used in fashion and furniture. In light of that, everyone should take this quiz: http://www.earthday.org/footprint-calculator Its quite enlightening on how the simple choices you make throughout the day, like just buying meat can have huge affects on the earth.

Since I've missed inspiration photos for the past few days here's some to make up for that:
I love these shadow box sort of desks. Perfect way to show a little personality in the home.
